Territory
(map)
Filignano is part of the province of Isernia, in the Molise Region. For those coming from Rome or Naples, its territory is the natural gate to the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise.
The twelve boroughs are scattered on three valleys stretching from the valley of Filignano (460 meters - 1500ft) to the ramparts of Monte Marrone (1860 meters – 5921ft).
A provincial road goes through the ancient rural countryside of the municipality. After the Selvone plain the road dives into the stunning Rio Chiaro gorge, whence it opens up to the magnificent view of the Mainarde (2142 meters, over 7000ft).
A network of paths goes through silent woods, crossed by dry stone walls. A number of votive aedicule can be seen, built by the popular devotion. Ancient medieval fortifications still stand, almost swallowed by the woods.
