Architectural features

The buildings of the High Volturno Valley are the result of successive aggregations.
Barns, cellars and other structures devoted to different functions are usually part of the buildings.

The construction material was always that available on site: limestone; decorated stones were only for the corners and around doors and windows. The rest of the masonry, very thick, is in stone. Plaster was for the main façades only.

The stairs, always external, provided room under them for a tiny barn for small animals. Windows are made of wood, painted in bright colors, small - to preserve heat.
The main door usually included a smaller one about three feet tall that allowed some air circulation in the rooms used for drying pork meat. In a low corner, a small hole allowed the house cat to get in and out.
Immediately adjacent to the house was the garden, where vegetables where grown.
